Petersburg

FORMER DIRECTOR OF THE PETERSBURG VESSEL OWNERS ASSOCIATION, RETIRED BIOLOGIST

Commercial fishing is the lifeblood of this town. This industry has been in existence around Petersburg for 100 plus years. We have third, fourth, fifth generation fishermen in Alaska. It’s a sustainable industry.

Each one of these vessels here, and we have roughly 600 commercially licensed vessels whose home port is Petersburg, is a small business. Many fishermen have millions of dollars invested in their businesses. This isn’t a hobby. It’s not something you do for now and then later you hang it up and go do something different. Fishing is what this town is all about.
