Wrangell

BARTENDER, SUBSISTENCE HUNTER AND FISHERMAN

I’ve lived in Wrangell my whole life. My mom was born and raised here, and my grandmother was from Thomas Bay and Farragut Bay. I’ve been up the Stikine River since I was a baby. My first trip up there was when I was a week old.

We go up the river and set up a little fish camp up there. We spend about three days and we all just get the fish together and process it all up the river. Between moose and fish from the river, that’s probably half of my year’s supply. I’ve also got family that gives me halibut and shrimp. That’s what I live off of. Subsistence.

I know the fishing’s also important to the Tahltans, and some of the other people up the Stikine. Keeping that river clean is very important.
